A new Integrated trash Tracking Solution (IWTS) for tracking and reporting on hazardous and regulated trash has been developed by the EPA in partnership with the Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES).
With this new solution, trash consignors, carriers, and receivers can track and report on all kinds of hazardous and regulated trash in one digital tool. This is a significant step towards fulfilling the National Waste Policy Action Plan and NSW Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041's promise to provide a tracking and data system for hazardous waste that is consistent across the country.
KPMG has been contracted by the EPA to create, develop, and run the IWTS using the KPMG Origins traceability platform. In order to create a clear and efficient solution, the EPA, DES, and KPMG collaborated with business owners and specialists in both states.
Starting in September 2023, there will be a gradual roll-out of the IWTS.
The IWTS is intended to provide a more data-driven and risk-based approach to regulating hazardous wastes while facilitating industry compliance with waste monitoring regulations.
Waste tracking is quicker and easier when done online. You may easily generate precise waste transport certifications and consignment authorisations in the IWTS. You can also store and retrieve pertinent data at any time.
All waste tracking and reporting in NSW are combined onto a single platform by the IWTS. This improves and expedites the procedure for monitoring and documenting trash movements both inside NSW and beyond state lines.
The IWTS will take the place of NSW's current hazardous and regulated waste tracking systems. This comprises the:
The WasteLocate system - this tracks interstate waste tyres and asbestos waste movements within NSW.
The Online Waste Tracking (OWT) system - this tracks movements of "trackable" waste, including liquid waste, listed under Schedule 1 of the Protection of the Environment Operations (Waste) Regulation 2014.
When will this change start?
Starting in September 2023, the IWTS will be gradually rolled out. The table below provides specific information on the expected timelines for this changeover process.
19 September 2023 - Operators in NSW who track waste tyres with WasteLocate are required by law to use the IWTS.
TBA - Operators in NSW who track asbestos trash with WasteLocate are required by law to use the IWTS.
TBA - Operators who use OWT for tracking and/or reporting:
intra- and interstate hazardous waste movements
interstate waste tyres and asbestos waste movements
movement of waste out of the NSW Metropolitan Levy Area
Sandbox learning
Sandbox learning is intended for the EPA to hear feedback about what the users like and what it can improve about the IWTS. This is now open and you can sign up to try it out by using this form (open until 15 November 2023).
The Sandbox learning for asbestos users is still under development and the EPA will send an email sometime this month (November 2023) with more details.
